To expand an abbreviation without adding a space or something, use Ctrl-]

See ":help abbreviations" and scroll down to after the definitions of 
the three kinds of abbreviations.


When none of the three kinds of abbreviations suits you, maybe a mapping 
will. The {lhs} of a mapping can be anything, and Vim will replace it 
immediately (in the appropriate mode(s)) by whatever you entered as the 
{rhs}.
