FWIW, I'm on Kubuntu 8.10, x86_64, nvidia driver version 173, Bitstream vera sans mono and gvim is fine. (KDE 4 is another story...) eval.txt (that is, :help eval) displayed in an 80 line window, takes 9 s to page to the end (holding the page down key down).
