much appreciated bill: yes, I've tried cream. I'm learning vim via
gvim. Cream is one step removed I think. I like having vim in console
though using gvim as my editor for everything I used to use jedit and
scite for is the goal.

Ben: most interesting and I've given it a try....

Went ot your first link and then found what I think is the
gvim.desktop icon/file at
/usr/share/applications/

it was empty which made me wonder if I was getting it. Was that the
right file I thought.
So then to the blank file I added:

Exec=gvim -p --remote-tab-silent %F

Then I needed to open with gvim.desktop to get any text files to open
with anything gvim related. Also the option to open with simply gvim
was gone.

This didn't work at all.

So.. still really searching though I have a clue now.... hehehe
thanks! any other ideas where I went wrong. The gvim.desktop file was
in a folder with a ton of other icons at /usr/share/applications/

Is this what you get there?

I also added tab all to my ~/.vimrc

Most interested to solve this one.
