I suspect a termcap misunderstanding between Vim and the terminal. What
is 'term' set to?
If nothing else avails, you might try
:set <kMultiply> <something>
where <something> is obtained by hitting Ctrl-V followed by the keypad-*
key. If it works and you want to add it to your vimrc, don't forget to
wrap it in an appropriate "if" so that it gets set only for that
particular terminal and not for gvim. Note that the <something> is
probably different for each of the following:
- konsole
- xterm
- gnome-terminal
- the Linux text consoles on Ctrl-Alt-F1 to Ctrl-Alt-F6 (and, after
using them, come back to X by Ctrl-Alt-F7)
and possibly also
- screen
- each separate kind of remote console session

The latest version is 7.2.148. You may want to get it, either from your
Linux distro if you can find it there, or by compiling it yourself from
the official sources, see
http://users.skynet.be/antoine.mechelynck/vim/compunix.htm
I'm not saying that upgrading will necessarily cure _this_ problem, but
it might cure _other_ problems.
