Instead of :q! you can use :bw! to force-close the current buffer and 
forget everything about it.

Yes, the = register allows using any arithmetic expression wherever you 
can use a register. It can sometimes be quite useful.

Me, I compile with Perl but I don't really use it. (I don't know the 
language, and programming Vim in vimscript is more portable. But I can 
if necessary use plugins written with perl -- or python, ruby, or tcl. I 
haven't yet found how to integrate mzscheme with Vim on this machine.)
