I thought that using C-R reverted to normal mode! Thanks for pointing,
this may be the solution :)) I didn't even bother to try because I
assumed that using the expression register with C-R switched to normal
during the evaluation of the function.

Just curious: why has the function to return null? Is it a requirement
or just that usually you don't want anything inserted after using the
expression register?
