I suspect this is not the real xterm because xterm does not depend on vte while
most newer terminals including gnome's default terminal are just wrapper to the
almighty libvte.

$ sudo dpkg -L xterm | grep termcap
/usr/share/doc/xterm/xterm.termcap.gz
$ sudo dpkg -L libvte-common | grep termcap
/usr/share/vte/termcap
/usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm

I suggest him to confirm what terminal is being used first. Or explicitly
install xterm using synaptic or aptitude.
