does it work if you're local to the server (and thus just an ssh issue)? Do visual commands work but just not appear (and thus a colorscheme issue)? Or do the visual-mode commands complain, which likely suggests a minimal build of Vim (often called "vim-tiny" or "vim-minimal")?
