Hello,
I am referring to the thread on special characters because it seems to be
close to my question:

I am using vim to write groff -mom texts. Sometimes when I save (:w) the
status bar shows "[converted]" and sometimes it doesn't (why?). In both cases
:set enc returns utf-8
But in the files not converted I get bogus instead of german umlauts after
processing with groff -mom.
Can somebody please point me to relevant help on this? I think I have to
aquire some background to begin with.
