You can set the 'statusline' option locally to something that looks
like an empty string (but isn't). E.g.,
let &l:statusline = ' '
Important Note: There's a literal <Space> character inside the single
quotes. The reason is that an empty string is interpreted as the
'statusline' default.

:help :let-option
:help 'statusline'
