If you explain why you want to have your selection visible, then it would help the folks on the list to give the right suggestion. I am not sure if this fits your bill, but my multiselect plugin lets you press <Enter> on the visual selection to add to the list of selections and thus make it appear permanently selected (though it is not in the same sense of a visual selection).
