IMO this will be difficult without self-selection bias. There may be many people on Linux that are just using vim as a vi implementation, unaware or only slightly so that they are using compatibility mode. I imagine the main reason for this that they switch around on other unixes where vi is what you always get. A couple of years ago I was working in a shop with Red Hat and the distro only had vim version 6, which almost all of the developers found adequate because it was a complete vi.
