however, it occurs to me there is no timeout for abbreviations or 
motion commands -- i just typed a 'd' in command mode and it sat 
there for a minute at least waiting for me to specify a motion -- 
i must have mis-understood your question, forgive me

and typing in input mode you can sit with the cursor at the end 
of a string that has been defined as an abbreviation all day if 
you want, and the abbreviation will be expanded when you hit the 
space or enter
