This only happens when there is a .vimrc (even if the vimrc is empty). It also happens whenever vim sources a runtime script, eg
:syntax enable will cause the ABRT. I found this https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vim/+question/86350 which is the exact same problem, apparently in a previous *distro package* for vim in ubuntu 9.10. So presumably the ubuntu packagers are aware of some kind of issue. Subsequently, someone else reported the same problem building from source. I did file a bug report with ubunut, I have not done so with vim yet. I also did an strace. vim does open, read, process, and close the file, then handles the ABRT subsequently.
