For most people and most occasions, I think the Debian package is fine. If it isn't compiled with the options you prefer, or if you want a more up-to-date build with more patches, or you'd like to try a non-standard patch (like Vince Negri's "conceal" patch that some list regulars enjoy), you'd probably want to compile your own Vim. But I was mainly commenting on the beauty of getting help specifically for your own operating system. The generic advice would have been to install all of the build dependencies for Vim. But Matt's nice hint for Debian-derived distributions is a lot less work on those operating systems, and it's a piece of generically useful advice for other packages on a Debian system.
