Willie,
The Txtfmt plugin allows you to highlight arbitrary text strings in Vim:

Txtfmt (The Vim Highlighter): http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2208
Screenshots: http://www.txtfmt.webs.com

It provides a sort of "rich text" capability for text documents created with Vim: i.e., configurable fg/bg colors, and all permutations of underline, bold, italic, etc... Is this the capability you're describing?

Thanks,
