i did a copy&paste without the "set paste" -
so the commas were interpreted by my mapping.  dang!
(thanks to Antony Scriven for pointing this out!)

so.. here are the correct versions of those mappings:

       map  ,,     :w<cr>
      imap  ,, <c-o>:w<cr>

by the way, i got used to using the
double-comma for saving in a blink.
cant live without these one now. :)

i might use CTRL-J for saving the buffer -
but it's already been mapped to formatting
the current paragraph for years.. ;)

      nmap <C-J>      gqap
      vmap <C-J>      gq
