Yes, my gvim 7.2.411 does it.  I use 'showmode' and 'showcmd' and the
last line should display something like
-- (insert) VISUAL
--
8
(where the 8 is the selected word's length) and this displays
fleetingly but it is overwritten by blanks with the old file written
message at the top of the command-line's lines.
I see it for various settings of cmdheight (I tried 1, 2, 4) and using
the menu or <ctrl-o>:w to save the file.  It is necessary to be in
insert mode when saving and switching tabs.  showmode and showcmd need
not be on.
