Just put this in my .vimrc

ro...@novaprospect:~$ more .vimrc
inoremap <left> <esc><left>
inoremap <right> <esc><right>
inoremap <up> <esc><up>
inoremap <down> <esc><down>
ro...@novaprospect:~$

It does exactly what I want now. It exits insert mode when I hit a
cursor key. Thank you so much !
I was about to remove vim from my ubuntu !
Now I don't have to think about the editor when trying to write my
thesis.
