Yes, that would make more sense, especially since on re-reading I see
that the user can manually type the desired characters. I had
forgotten about that option. Are there any other encoding options to
worry about?

I wonder, since 'ga' shows both the manually typed as well as the
pasted characters as being the same, whether a simple :w | e would
"solve" the problem.
