If you just close the window, but keep the buffer loaded, the undo
history will also be kept, even in older vim versions. Do you have the
'hidden' option set? The persistent undo feature in vim 7.3 is for
keeping the history even if the buffer is unloaded, see the help for
'persistent-undo' in that case.
