Try to set it manually, by setting
:set t_kb=^V<BS>
(this is pressing <Ctrl-V> and afterwards backspace. This sets this 
option to the raw keycode of backspace (and it usually looks like ^H, 
but is only one char).

Additionally, see if any of the following help sections help you

:h :fixdel (and read at least until Linux-backspace)
:h backspace-delete
