The fix was to drop a character from the connection setting and replace mysql_pconnect by mysql_connect once (!?) I noticed it maybe 30min before I saw your post - but hoped the failure goes away - it did not. Possible causes are that Vim was one of the first projects on sf - and that it still used an old host name whose support was dropped ? Maybe it also relates to the recent attack on sf.
