You can probably solve your problem, but I think you'll need to give us more specifics. What are you trying to do? Is it a user-command? A mapping? An expression/function? ... What do you actually want it to do? Extract the selected text? Process it differently in different situations? Reuse the selection multiple times? ... The more specifically you can tell us about what you are trying to do, the easier it will be to help you. Preferably also include a simple short example.
