       :version
       VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled Nov 16 2010 17:05:25)
       Included patches: 1-56

       Huge version without GUI.

The "without GUI" seems to be the key. If you have a build that is GUI-aware, it should be able to access the clipboard. You might check the output for "+clipboard" and for "+xterm_clipboard"

Also remember that on X, you have both the Selection register ("*") and the Clipboard register ("+"). The former is for things that have been selected, while the latter is for thing's you've explicitly cut/copied.
