PuTTY is often used to remotely log in to a Unix system from a Windows system. It sets TERM to "xterm" by default, but I'm thinking about changing that to "putty". Some highlight color combinations that look good on a real xterm or on a GNOME Terminal look horrible on PuTTY, and knowing which terminal I'm really using would allow my color scheme to set better highlight colors.
