It is a last substitute search pattern which causes this behavior. I forgot 
that 
there are two «last search» patterns that vim remembers. Script to reproduce:
    vim -u NONE -i NONE -s <(<<< $'/abc\n:s/-//e\n:let @/=""\nn')
