I disagree, not showing the menu bar is part of the design of Unity. Other applications don't get one either, or at least when I ran Unity they didn't, particularly gnome-terminal. Perhaps the bug fix you refer to affected the display of the menu on mousing over the top of the screen; if I invoked gvim from gnome-terminal that didn't work, but it did if I used the vim icon that came with Unity.
