Oh, I think I get it.
With this user's mapping, typing {% will show (in the text) first the
{ as typed, then the % REPLACING the { in the buffer, and only after
pressing the final = will Vim show the entire text inserted.
I don't think there's an easy way around this, if there is any way
around it.
The suggested 'showcmd' setting will, however, show the fully typed
map text in the lower-right corner.
