:%s/\(\_[^[:backspace:]]\+\)\([[:backspace:]]\+\)/\=strlen(submatch(1))==strlen(submatch(2))?'':(submatch(1)[:(strlen(submatch(1))-(strlen(submatch(2))+1))])/ge
It's a bit ugly, but seems to work pretty quickly against all the
tests I threw at it.
