This returns the decimal value of the byte (character) under the
cursor:
> set statusline+=%b " decimal byte
:help statusline
b N Value of byte under cursor.
Since 'b' returns the decimal value as a number (N), could something
like this work?
(I cannot get it to work)
set statusline+=%{nr2char(b)} " character under cursor
