'relativenumber' shouldn't make it slower. I can't reproduce your
problem in a TeX document (ConTeXt). Can you provide an example
document that shows the problem? Have you installed any plugins that
might be slower with 'relativenumber' enabled?
Also, please provide `vim --version` (or :version) output.
