Well, you can change C-M, but it also alters the behavior of hitting <enter> on most platforms. In Normal mode, this is fairly benign, since (1) the behavior is duplicated by "+" and (2) that behavior is pretty rarely used in my experience (outside of Vimgolf, I almost never use it). In Insert mode, the use of <enter> is quite valuable and not worth overloading, IMHO.
