Ah, but Vim is only _largely_ foolproof. It is not proof against deliberate self harm. It might be worth reading enough to understand that "q!" is "Forced Quit", and so you didn't "lose" a file, but deliberately discarded it by choice. The "Forced Quit" is quite useful when used, if not intelligently, then at least consciously. However, a lesson learnt the hard way is usually a lesson well learned. Happy reading!
