When using
:echo inputdialog( 'What is your name?', 'Type it here', '-1' )

From gVim and you hit Esc or the Cancel button when prompted you get:
-1

:set guioptions+=c
:echo inputdialog( 'What is your name?', 'Type it here', '-1' )

and you hit Esc or CTRL-C, you get a blank value back.

This is also true if you use console vim, instead of the GUI.
