Thanks, Alick. So using backticks in Vim would avoid the problem in LyX I'll 
give it a try.

Apart from that, it's been suggested that I might be able to make use of the 
package myself. I've looked at the documentation, but don't have a good sense 
of what the possibilities might be yet.
