I saw the slowdown as well.  I turned off relative numbers and it was
still slow.  I turned of line numbering all together, and it was still
slow.

Then I turned off syntax highlighting (:syntax off) and the slowdown
went away.  I'm of the opinion that syntax highlighting for TEX and
XML files is just slow.
