Looks like yet another suffix for zip files (there are 36 and counting...). I use calibre to see epub files myself, so I'm not sold on making *.epub files part of the standard zip recognition autocmds. Netrw's "x" command already invokes calibre on the filetype for me, and I have an autocmd that invokes netrw+calibre when I try "editing" an epub file. So, I commented out my autocmd line invoking netrw's method for handling epub files...

And then I tried using the autocmd you gave above in my .vimrc file on an epub file that had plenty of spaces in it:

$HOME/Calibre Library/John Schember/Calibre Quick Start Guide (1)/Calibre Quick Start Guide - John Schember.epub

It opened the file properly and gave a me a listing. I then selected one of the xhtml files therein; it too, opened without a problem. So, I am unable to duplicate your issue.

I did these things using a Scientific Linux 6.3 o/s and zip.vim v27. If your zip.vim isn't v27, you may get a copy from my website: http://www.drchip.org/astronaut/vim/index.html#ZIP .
