The only effect I know of on syntax highlighting is that perl included within a
Vim script is highlighted as an error by default if has('perl') returns zero.
As for other advantages, if you find a plugin that depends on Perl support, you
can use that plugin if has('perl') returns 1. I've not seen a plugin that uses
Perl but I'm sure there is at least one out there.
There ARE plenty of plugins that rely on Python or Ruby.
