Thanks Christian.  That's a wonderful section and solved my issue.  But that is 
very weird in itself: going through the debug process, step by step, *SOLVED* 
my issue.  I didn't change anything, I just diagnosed that the problem did not 
occur in 1) my .viminfo 2) my .vimrc 3) any plugins, then after that the delay 
just stopped happening at all. 

So... awesome.  If anyone has clues as to what state change may have occurred 
by going through the debugging process, it would probably be good to include as 
an explanation here, but I'm satisfied anyway.
