Fair enough.  Actually, given the longevity of Telnet, I'd sooner
finger my terminal and/or ANSI escape sequences as a risk.  So I
suppose a safest version would be something like

 printf 'GET /path HTTP/1.1\r\nhost:host.name\r\n\r\n' | nc host.name 80 | xxd

to test http://host.name/path
