My first thought would be to see if you can make the mappings with no plugins/startup files: vim -u NONE -N somefile.txt and then try making alt+? do something: :nnoremap <m-?> :put="Hello"<cr> and test it. As previously mentioned, that works for me in an xterm and in gvim, but not in my rxvt.
