Hi Philip,

When you start vim and it sees a .vimrc, then it sets nocompatible.
However if you start vim with -u, it doesn't do this and compatible
defaults to on. This is probably why it's not working, since the <>
notation isn't available when compatible is on. Try doing

   vim -N -u ./.vimrc_Maildir

instead.
