I do it in example code because I understand it's the Right Way™. I think it's so that you can delete all the autocmds in the group in one pass, which is more helpful in plugins rather than when having it apply globally. Truth be told, if I'm using them in my vimrc at all, I just use the raw "au BuffEnter * norm zz" style commands rather than wrapping them in a augroup.
