That worked well!  Thank you.

I now have this in my ~/.vimrc, to avoid modifying SpellCheck.vim.

    if v:version == 700
        try
            call function('SpellCheck#AutoEnableSpell')
        catch
            let g:loaded_SpellCheck = 1
        endtry
    endif
