For what it's worth, I usually say that learning Vim is like learning a
programming language for text editing, and that one should not learn
a(nother) new language while learning Vim.

In particular, don't attempt to learn LaTeX *and* Vim (or Emacs) when you
start writing your bachelor's thesis!
