I'm not sure that I'm able to reproduce your problem; once I press
CTRL-X from insert mode, the following message remains in my status
line until I press another key:

    -- ^X mode (^]^D^E^F^I^K^L^N^O^Ps^U^V^Y)

Is that what you are expecting to have happen?

My first thought is that you may have CTRL-X mapped from insert mode.
You might try this command to see if this is so and where the mapping
is defined

    :verbose imap <C-X>

It it doesn't turn out to be a mapping, and because you don't see the
problem when starting vim with -u NONE, you should rule out your
startup files under ~/.vim one by one until you hit upon the culprit.

Good luck!
