This is the result of how :function command is implemented: instead of
doing real parsing when Vim finds :function command it starts to simply
consume lines up until it finds :endfunction. Characters after declaration
are not considered (this is why you get this error) and lines that have
`{command} | endfunction` do not end the function either (because
:endfunction is not on a separate line and without real parsing there is no
way to know whether it is a part of the command (e.g. let s .= "|
endfunction") or a separate command).
