This works for me:
vim -u NONE -i NONE --cmd 'au BufNew * :call DefAu()' --cmd $'fu
DefAu()\nau CursorHold <buffer=abuf> echo "hold"\nendfu' -c enew
: periodically prints `hold` as expected. (Needs zsh or bash because
$'' is not present in POSIX shells.)
