That sounds like "Draw intense colour in bold font" for an ANSI red (which is otherwise too dim), in a font that doesn't have proper bold so it gets a fake smeared out bold font. But we're guessing unless you tell us OS, gvim or vim, font, and if vim which terminal emulator, and maybe which vim colour scheme. > Hmmm, strangely, I can't attach the image to this post.
